\"Agriculture,<\/a>Standards for agriculture \u2013 particularly horticulture \u2013 are exacting. European governments have\u00a0devised regulations for imported crops. African governments which fail to impose necessary\u00a0checks across the entire agricultural supply chain are denied a market for their produce. The\u00a0private sector, too, is increasingly involved in setting standards for agriculture. A parallel\u00a0system of private voluntary standards responds to consumer concerns for food safety, the\u00a0environment and labour conditions. Farmers in Africa \u2013 large and small \u2013 have had to adapt their\u00a0methods to satisfy governments, retailers and consumers in export markets.<\/p>\n

In this timely study, Martha Byanyima chronicles the history and development of agricultural\u00a0standards in Africa. Although international standards often are considered a barrier to trade,\u00a0she argues that they are in fact an opportunity \u2013 both within and outside Africa. Martha\u00a0recognises the progress made by African countries to comply with agricultural standards, but is\u00a0candid about that the difficulties which lie ahead. Institutional reform, education of smallholders\u00a0and coordination of supply will test the skills and determination of African countries keen to\u00a0increase their stake in a burgeoning global trade.<\/p>\n
