Human\u00a0rights organisations fiercely opposed the use of\u00a0<em>gacaca\u00a0<\/em>for\u00a0trying genocide cases, on the grounds that it fell short of\u00a0international legal standards of fairness. Much criticism\u00a0reflects legal rigidity towards the unprecedented challenges\u00a0confronting post-genocide Rwanda \u2013 and a limited\u00a0understanding of the aims of the community courts.\u00a0<em>Gacaca\u00a0<\/em>was inevitably imperfect, but also highly ambitious and\u00a0innovative. While the full impact of the process will not be\u00a0apparent for many years, <em>gacaca<\/em> has delivered benefits to\u00a0Rwandans in the spheres of justice, truth and democratic\u00a0participation.
