Since 2001, the\u00a0gacaca\u00a0<\/em>community courts have been the\u00a0centrepiece of Rwanda\u2019s justice and reconciliation process.\u00a0Nearly every adult Rwandan has participated in the trials, but\u00a0lawyers are banned from any official involvement. Human\u00a0rights organisations fiercely opposed the use of\u00a0gacaca\u00a0<\/em>for\u00a0trying genocide cases, on the grounds that it fell short of\u00a0international legal standards of fairness. Much criticism\u00a0reflects legal rigidity towards the unprecedented challenges\u00a0confronting post-genocide Rwanda \u2013 and a limited\u00a0understanding of the aims of the community courts.\u00a0Gacaca\u00a0<\/em>was inevitably imperfect, but also highly ambitious and\u00a0innovative. While the full impact of the process will not be\u00a0apparent for many years, gacaca has delivered benefits to\u00a0Rwandans in the spheres of justice, truth and democratic\u00a0participation. Other societies confronting the aftermath of\u00a0mass conflict could learn much from Rwanda\u2019s approach to\u00a0local justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
